Delivering your goods to your customers on time and in good order is our business. But sometimes it happens that the process needs to be reversed – this is where our reverse logistics service comes in.
What is Reverse Logistics?
When you read on our website that we offer reverse logistics, you may ask what exactly it is. According to Wikipedia:
Reverse logistics is for all operations related to the reuse of products and materials. It is “the process of moving goods from their typical final destination for the purpose of capturing value, or proper disposal.”
That might sound very confusing but in short, reverse logistics means any form of handling goods after the sale (or sometimes before, as in the case of goods sent for demonstration purposes) and transfer of product has been concluded.
There are a few cases in which reverse logistics may be needed. Sometimes in the case of COD items, the buyer refuses to accept the goods. In some cases reusable packaging needs to go back to the point of origin. Such is often the case with pallets, reusable bottles, etc. It also happens that a company takes goods on consignment. When these goods are not sold after a certain period of time, it has to be returned to the manufacturer or distributor. This return process is part of the initial transaction, so it will require return logistics rather than a separate transport order.
Reverse Logistics – A Case Study
At times, the customer for some reason is not satisfied with the goods or products they received. In such a case they will use return logistics to get the defective of unsatisfactory goods back to the manufacturer.
Company A manufactures computer parts. Company B imports these parts from Company A, as they build and sell computers. They have been doing business for years and everything runs smoothly. But then there is an engine malfunction at Company A, causing a glitch in their system. A specific computer part looks fine and they decide to fulfill the order that Company B placed for these parts.
When the new parts arrive at Company B, technicians get straight to work on assembling computers in time for the Christmas market. But upon testing, the computers don’t work like they should. The screen resolution seems fuzzy and no matter how they change the settings, it doesn’t get any better.
After testing four of these troublesome computers, Company B draws the conclusion that the new parts must be defective. They get in contact with Company A, who tells them to immediately send back all the defective parts. They in turn will arrange for shipment of a replacement order as soon as possible.
Company B gets in contact with Macro Clearing, as we helped deliver all the previous shipments of these computer parts. We immediately put our reverse logistics in place to see that every part we delivered just days before gets packed and shipped back to Company A, while also forwarding the new shipment from Company A to Company B.
